For side hustles

It can be a side thing and still look like a business.

Most of this starts in the evenings and at weekends. What makes it feel real to the person paying you is not the hours you put in. It is that the agreement, the questions and the bill all arrive in one tidy place with your name on it.

Sound familiar

What this usually looks like.

  1. 01

You are fitting this around a job, so the admin happens late at night — and the parts you keep meaning to write properly are the parts a new client sees first.

  2. 02

The money arrives through whichever app was quickest that day, so at the end of the year you are scrolling three inboxes trying to work out what you actually earned.

  3. 03

You are not sure you are allowed to ask for an agreement or money up front yet, so you do not — and then you are three weeks in, unpaid, and too polite to bring it up.

Where to start

What you send them first.

In this order. Everything with a name below is a document that is already written — open it, change what does not fit, send it.

  1. 01

    Simple services agreementFree plan

Short, fair, and written for one person doing a defined piece of work for a fee. Sending one is the thing that makes this feel like a business, to them and to you.

  2. 02

    How we work togetherFree plan

What happens, in what order, and what you need from them — the questions they were too polite to ask.

  3. 03

    Your first bill

Money up front, taken by card, before you spend an evening on it.

  4. 04

    Kickoff checklistFree plan

The few things that have to be true before you start, ticked off by whichever of you does them.

Nothing to write

And everything else you might need.

19 documents come with your portal — contracts, forms, checklists and two short guides about money. 5 documents are on the free plan, the rest on any paid one. Every word in them is yours to change, and they are starting points rather than legal advice.

Worth knowing

Making Tax Digital, and whether it reaches you

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax reaches sole traders and landlords in stages, by income from self-employment or property — over £50,000 from April 2026; then over £30,000 from April 2027; then over £20,000 from April 2028. Whichever stage is yours, the sooner what you have billed lives somewhere tidy, the less there is to reconstruct later.

HMRC guidance on gov.uk (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/find-out-if-and-when-you-need-to-use-making-tax-digital-for-income-tax), as of August 2026.

Straight answers

A couple of things worth asking.

Do I need to be a registered business?

No. Plenty of people start with nothing more than their own name. This gives you somewhere to send people that looks like more than a phone number. Nothing here decides your tax status for you, and none of it is tax advice.

Can I keep my day job out of it?

Yes. Your portal has its own web address and your own name on it, and it never mentions anything else you do.

Does this do my tax return?

No, and it never will. It keeps a tidy record of every bill you have sent, and you can download the lot as a spreadsheet, one tax year at a time. Whoever does your tax does the rest.
